In my experience, the terms “cultural fit” and “overqualified” are code for “too old”. There. I said it. I’ve been dealing with age discrimination in tech for a while. Very few acknowledge it. It’s frustrating and demoralizing.
No one is going to come out and tell you that they think you’re too old to work for their organization. No one is that crazy. Also, it’s illegal to do so.
A post on LinkedIn from January 2018, hit the nail on the head in terms of what these buzz words really mean.
Age discrimination is real. For all the talk about wanting to have and increase diversity in tech, it is forgotten that age diversity is just as important as diversity in gender or race. Please don’t count out older, experienced people…we can bring a wealth of knowledge, perspective, and experience to your organization.
Stop with the diversity talk if you’re going to leave age discrimination out of the conversation.
